My Hero

A friend of mine gave her daughter a trunk of dress up clothes for Christmas one year. She had purchased the bunch of costumes on sale after Halloween. I thought the idea was so creative. Matthew was a little over two-years-old at that time and even though nothing stood between him and his train play I felt inspired to do the same thing for him one day.

When he was a three-year-old he became swept up by the world of Toy Story. From summer until spring lived in his Buzz Lightyear costume. He refused to answer to any other name except Buzz. It was that Halloween that I presented him with a dress up clothes stash. He tossed it aside after trying on a few different capes. Buzz Lightyear doesn’t wear a cape.

When he turned four-years-old Matthew asked his friends to wear costumes to his birthday party. He was invited to many costume birthday parties from spring into this summer as well. Sometimes the Buzz costume was in the wash and he would grab something else instead. Or maybe he would have a friend over to play who really wanted to be Buzz and he would have to examine his other options.

In recent months our costume collection has expanded.  We’re always keeping an eye out for a good bargain on dress up clothes because it encourages creative play. Matthew still doesn’t answer to his name but that’s alright with me. I’ve made pizza with a knight, picked Tom Brady up from school, and been kissed goodnight by Superman.

  1. Sweet! Even as a grown-up, I still think dress-up clothes are the best toys. Looks like you all have lots of fun.
